Ian Plant posted an excellent article on how he uses the Live View feature of his DSLR.
Using Live View for Nature Photography
I use Live View in much the same way, and Ian’s descriptive writing lays the process out very well.
A couple things I’ll add…
- I continue to use a loupe on the LCD of my DSLR just like I did on the ground glass of my 4×5. I picked up this tip from my friend Jim Talaric. Using a loupe magnifies the LCD image, reducing the button clicking and joystick maneuvering required when using the LCD’s zoom feature. It also improves the viewing experience by blocking out unwanted glare. It really makes the LCD image snap! Hoodman and probably others make loupes specially designed for DSLR LCDs. But I just use the same 10x loupe that I used with my 4×5 system, and it works great.
- Using these Live View techniques in combination with tilt-shift (TS-E) lenses is outstanding. As you can imagine, this makes operating a DSLR in a very similar manner as a view camera – just without the dark cloth, bellows and film holders.
Happy Live Viewing!!
