GoLite VO24 Review

I’ve been looking for a new daypack with features to perform a very specific function – carrying gear on forays away from an overnight base camp. I need something that can easily stow away in my overnight backpack (without adding too much bulk and weight) and then be pulled out, expanded, filled with gear and be used comfortably/conveniently for sunrise/sunset shoots and all-day exploring.

After researching the specifications of over 50 packs, the GoLite VO24 had risen into the top 3 on my short list. So when the 2009 version popped up on SteepAndCheap for a mere $40, I couldn’t resist. I snagged the deal and it arrived last week.  Here are the specific features I was looking for and the VO24 fulfilled:

  1. GoLite VO24 (2009)

    Medium capacity, 1500 –  2500 cu. in.

  2. Light weight, less than 2 lbs.
  3. Good harness and waist belt for comfort (waist belt pockets are a bonus)
  4. No stiff back sheet or rails
  5. Water bladder compatible
  6. Loops on shoulder straps to attach camera holster
  7. Exterior pockets for water bottles lens cases
  8. Place to conveniently attach tripod

My first impressions of the GoLite VO24 are VERY positive.

  1. This is a well made and well thought out pack. And with 2500 cu. in. there is plenty of room for a day’s worth of gear.
  2. It is feather light with the large size weighing in at 23 oz. And its packed with convenient features.
  3. The harness and waist belt seem well-formed and plenty comfy (but haven’t been trail tested yet).
  4. Incredibly, this pack rolls up into a 9″ x 5″ bundle.
  5. There is a large interior pocket separating a water bladder from the rest of your gear.
  6. The loops on the shoulder straps are a little high, so I’m still looking for a good combination of webbing/carabiner to attach my Think Tank holster.
  7. Lowepro lens case #1 and #1W fit nicely in the water bottle pockets. The zipper on each lens case sits just above the rim of the pocket – sufficient protection and easy access to lenses.
  8. Storing my tripod in the front pocket and under the bungee cords works perfectly.

Of course, the real test will come with this summer’s first overnight trip. I’ll be sure to post a follow-up.
