First Light on Warrior Peaks

I just returned from a backpack trip to Cirque of the Towers – Popo Agie Wilderness in the southern Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. This was my second trip to “The Cirque” and the conditions were very different due to several factors – wildflowers, weather and mosquitoes. 4 years ago, during the first week of August, it appears we missed most of the wildflower bloom, the weather was variable with morning sun and afternoon thunderstorms, and we didn’t use a drop of insect repellent. This year, towards the end of July, the wildflowers were at peak bloom, the weather was hot, windless and totally-perfectly-endlessly-horizon-to-horizon-clear (not a good thing photogenically), and the mosquitoes were unbearable – no amount of deet could ward off the swarms.

Regardless of the conditions, the cirque is an amazing place. With the dramatic granite spires, abundant tarns and glowing sunrise light, its hard for a photographer to go wrong.

Here’s one of my favorites from the trip, so far. I still have hundreds of images to look through…

Man, these are some awesome images! The light on these peaks is sweet, and I really like the comp in both (esp. the waterfall shot). Well done.

And, having just returned from a mosquito-laden trip myself, I can feel your pain. I learned that its harder to compost a shot with a headnet on than one might think!

I’m sorry you weren’t able to get a single cloud out of the deal, but it looks like you made do exceptionally well with what you had to work with. I really like all the ones you posted, and think I like the waterfall one the best. It seems awfully late in the season to have mosquito problems, so I find that a bit peculiar.

I will give you a call at some point in the near future as I’m planning to go here at the end of the month. It is/was down to this place or Titcomb, but I’m leaning towards here as there seems to be a lot more peaks and unique scenes to point a camera at.

    Thanks, Greg!

Darren, let me know if you’re going to the Cirque. I’d be happy to share info… The mosquitoes were the worst I’ve experienced in the lower 48. It was really wet up there and apparently there was a series of big, wet storms the previous week. We may have just happened to be there during the peak hatch. I don’t know, but it was gnarly-infuriating-unpleasant…
