Lowepro Pro Runner 300 AW

Lowepro recently introduced a new line of backpacks. The Photo Runner series is kind of a slimmed down, simplified version of the well known Trekker series. So, I’m trying out a new Lowepro Pro Runner 300 AW

I needed a bag to hold and provide easy access to all my equipment. Previously, I’d use and very much like the briefcase style Lowepro Omni  series. I have both the Omni Sport and the Omni Traveler (slightly bigger). I like their slim profile, full-zip access and organized pockets. They are great for travel and shooting from the vehicle. But alas, my equipment has outgrown the Omni Traveler. So I went directly to find the next size up, the Omni Trekker, and discovered that Lowepro has discontinued this line. Bummer! Although I could still find the Omni Trekker at some online retailers, I started researching similar options. That’s when I found the Pro Runner 300 AW and it was less expensive than the discontinued Omni Trekker. Bonus!

In a nutshell, here’s the equipment I’ve packed into it:

  • Canon EOS 5D Mark II w/ Canon EF 24-105mm F/4 L lens attached
  • Canon EF 70-200 f/4 L lens
  • Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 lens
  • Canon EF TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II
  • Canon EF TS-E 17mm f/4 L
  • Small, old Canon 200 E Speedlight
  • Extra batteries, memory cards, bubble level, remote switch, microphone, filters, lens cloth, etc.

Its pretty full, but I could probably fit another lens or two with some creative rearranging. So, what’s to like and what should you be fore-warned about…

Likes:

  • Slim profile and lies flat on the shoulder straps (not crazy bulky like the Trekker series).
  • Easy access, large U zipper to main compartment – zip and grab.
  • Surprisingly comfortable shoulder straps (and tuck-away waist strap), even fully packed with tripod attached. I wouldn’t hike all day with this pack, but a hour wouldn’t be out of the question. I was not expecting this level of comfort.
  • All the Lowepro well thought out niceties – AW cover, tripod attachment, memory card and other organizational pockets, etc.

Dislikes:

  • About the only thing I’ve found that I don’t like is the zipper on the front-most pocket. You know the one with the pen holders, key ring, etc. This zipper tends to get caught in the flap meant to give it some weather protection. Its more of an annoying nuisance than a real dislike. It doesn’t get caught if you angle the zipper pull away from the flap and this has just about become second nature already.

Conclusion: A functional, easy to use, comfortable backpack for shooting from the vehicle and short trail distances at a reasonable price point. Well done, Lowepro.
