Travelogues and Trip Reports...

The following travelogues and trip reports include excerpts from my personal travel journals, and contain extra photos not displayed in my image galleries...

October 11-12, 2009 ~ Slickhorn Canyon - Cedar Mesa, Utah
Ancient ruins and autumn colors draw the explorer and inspire creativity. Hiking these remote canyons filled me with wonder and appreciation for those who once made their lives here.

July 18-21, 2009 ~ Paradise Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Special permit to explore a special place in Rocky Mountain National Park. Off-trail, off-grid remote and pristine wilderness. This is an incredible place... Interactive map now includes auto-tour. Sit back and fly through Paradise...

May 2-4, 2009 ~ Dominguez Canyon Wilderness, Colorado
A 3-day backpack into the newly designated Dominguez Canyons Wilderness. We didn't follow our planned loop route, but we still had a great time exploring and photographing the canyons, waterfalls and cottonwood trees adorned in their spring green folliage. Interactive map now includes auto-tour. Sit back and fly through the canyonlands of Western Colorado...

September 28, 2008 ~ Cathedral Lake, Colorado
A fantastic hike to the stunning Cathedral Lake, outside Aspen, CO, during the peak of fall colors. This is a new trip report format which includes both a captioned slideshow and interactive map with hiking route and images...

August 2-4, 2008 ~ The Snowy Range, Wyoming
Wildflower season among the peaks and numerous lakes of the Snowy Range in Southern Wyoming. This was my first photo/camping trip on my motorcycle. The weather was perfect and the wildflowers were abundant. Every time I visit the Snowy Range, I vow to spend more time there - what a great place!

April 3-7, 2008 ~ Grand Staircase Escalante & Capitol Reef ~ Utah
My first real photo trip to Grand Staircase Escalante and Capitol Reef, and it won't be my last! We found some amazing off-the-beaten-path locations and also visited some familiar icons.

October 13, 2007 ~ Cedar Mesa, Utah
Fall colors, red rock canyons and ancient ruins make for unlimited photographic opportunities. This is a place that you could explore for a lifetime. Every twist and turn, in every canyon, reveals something wonderful.

September 22-23, 2007 ~ Fall Colors, Colorado
An early season visit to Kebler Pass for some hiking and scouting of new locations. A stormy afternoon viewing Capitol Peak. And a soggy day along Castle Creek around Ashcroft. Autumn in Colorado can deliver just about any kind of conditions.

July 27-28, 2007 ~ Lost Lake, Weminuche Wilderness, Colorado
A short, soggy, difficult backpack trip into the Weminuche Wilderness. But the wildflowers, scenery and campsite views were more spectacular than you could imagine. This is a remote place that I absolutely MUST visit again.

July 25-26, 2007 ~ Ice Lakes Basin, Colorado
Rain, hail, shoulder-high wildflowers and a series of ever more beautiful cirques high in the San Juan Mountains.

July 24, 2007 ~ West Fork Pass, Uncompahgre Wilderness, Colorado
One of my favorite hikes up the West Fork of the Cimarron River to a sweet view of one of my favorite mountains, Colorado's Wetterhorn.

July 15, 2007 ~ Mirror Lake & Lone Eagle Peak, Colorado
A great hike and destination on the West side of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. It can be either a very long day-hike (bring your stamina), or you can make it an overnight. And although I'm mostly a landscape photographer, you can see one of my very few (and mediocre) wildlife photos in this collection. But watch out, its definitely not one of those warm-fuzzy animals.

June 30, 2007 ~ Lake Isabelle, Indian Peaks Wilderness, Colorado
A justly popular hike just an hour from Denver on the front range of Colorado. Great early and late season hiking (be prepared for snow), as well as a decent wildflower destination.

September 16-17, 2007 ~ Mill Castle & 3 Lakes Trails, Colorado
A trip through Gunnison National Forest in early fall - too early for peak aspen color, but I managed to come away with a few images.

August 2-6, 2006 ~ Deep Lake & Cirque of the Towers, Wyoming
An iconic location on the Southern end of the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming. Granite spires, clear streams and sapphire lakes make this one of the most incredible backpacking trips of my life.

July 14, 2006 ~ Arrowhead Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park
A familiar, distant view from Trail Ridge Road, but this destination is seldom visited due to its off-trail location. It is a strikingly beautiful cirque. And something new... A downloadable KMZ file for Google Earth that includes my hiking route and images along the way.

April 1, 2006 ~ Mayflower Gulch, Colorado
A short winter ski with some other photographer/friends.

November, 2005 ~ Niwot Ridge, Indian Peaks Wilderness, Colorado
A pre-dawn snowshoe jaunt up Niwot Ridge.

July, 2005 ~ The Hearst Castle, California
A day-trip to the palatial Hearst grounds on the California middle-coast.

March, 2005 ~ Xi'an, China
My first trip to the East turns a work assignment into one of the best cultural experiences of my life.

October, 2003 ~ The Crystal River Valley
A simple trip report that is still one of the most visited areas on my website.

October, 2002 ~ Europe Tour
The summer college trip that we never took - traveling light and by train, staying in hostels (sometimes), eating on the cheap and visiting some of the most historic cities of the Western world.

June, 2002 ~ Backpacking the South St. Vrain, Colorado
A close-to-home short, early season backpacking trip in the Indian Peaks Wilderness of Colorado.

June, 2002 ~ Mills Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
  A day-hike in beautiful Rocky.

March, 2002 ~ Neversummer Nordic Yurt Trip
Backcountry hut skiing in Colorado State Forest.

February, 2002 ~ The 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah
  Immersion in the Olympic spirit.

June, 2001 ~ The Olympic Peninsula, Seattle, Mt. St. Helens, Washington
A summer tour of beautiful and diverse Washington state.

May, 2000 ~ Dominguez Canyon Wilderness Study Area, Colorado
Another frequently visited page on my website - great Colorado canyon country with surprisingly lush streambeds.

October, 1999 ~ New Zealand Tour
Traveling and honeymooning on the islands down under - fantastic experiences and great memories. What more needs to be said?

April, 1998 ~ Italy Tour
My first trip to the country where the light seems to always be good.
