Day 24 - Vienna
After
a very nice breakfast at the pension, we headed out to Hofburg Palace. It
contains the unbelievable wealth of the Hapsburg Dynasty. We toured the
silver and china rooms, the Kaiser Apartments and the treasury displaying
amazing crown jewels, swords, scepters and robes.
We got a quick bite to eat and found an internet cafe to
catch up with family and friends. Meanwhile the gray, drizzly weather
following us from Prague arrived. We decided to hop the metro anyway and
make our way to Grinzing in the hills above Vienna. This is wine country and
is quaint and small compared to Vienna. We continued up from Grinzing to the
end of the line. Unfortunately, the cloud ceiling was so low that we could
not enjoy the spectacular views of the city as we had seen in the pictures
of the guide book. We joked as we stood next to the sign extorting the
wonderful view. On this day, the visibility was about 100 feet due to the
fog!
We hiked up a trail into the forest and climbed a short
way to a small look-out tower. On a better day we would have happily paid
the small toll to climb to the top and enjoy the view. But today, we could
barely even see the top of the tower, let alone the view!
We returned to the room, laughing at how our good luck
with the weather had finally run out...
