Day 25 - Vienna to Salzburg

We made early, 8:30am, reservations to tour Schloss Schonbrunn. What a beautiful palace and setting. You can easily see the competition that was going on with the French at the time this palace was built. It seems every country wanted their own version of Versailles. Personally, I think the Hapsburgs did very well! Don't miss Schonbrunn!!

As with Versailles, the gardens are just as incredible as palace apartments and furnishings.

St. Charles CathedralWe headed back to the hotel directly after our tour stopping only for a quick look at St. Charles Cathedral. We checked out and retrieve our luggage, then hopped the 11:20am train to Salzburg. The rain was kind enough to hold off for our morning sight-seeing, but by the time we boarded the train the skies had opened up into a downpour.

We passed through beautiful country along the way to Salzburg, though we could not see the mountains due to the low cloud ceiling and pouring rain. We arrived around 3:00pm, donned our rain jackets and made our way via bus to the hotel. We got checked into the Hotel Goldene Krone and discovered a very nice room with a window and a view (of the clouds and rain). We discovered that there was some sort of fair going on, so we stopped into a local store, bought a cheap umbrella to cuddle beneath and cruised among the street vendors peddling all sorts of interesting wares and tid-bits to eat. We mostly wandered around and oriented ourselves until we couldn't stand the rain anymore and retreated to a coffee shop for a latte, hot chocolate and a snack.
