Day 30 - Fussen and the Romantic Road
The past few days of little to no photography sure
changed today as we woke early to clearing skies and headed south on the
famous autobahn to Fussen.
We arrived in the small, picturesque village with fog
shrouding the fairy tale castles. But it soon began to break and the light
on these impressive structures was absolutely beautiful - I could not have
asked for better.
We purchased tickets and grabbed a curry wurst for a
snack as we hiked to Schloss Hohenschwangau for our first castle tour.

The hike to Schloss Neuschwanstein is short but steep and
we certainly benefited from our mountain trained legs (and lungs). We made
the trek to Marien Brucke for the spectacular views of the castle and then
made our way to the courtyard to await our scheduled tour time of the castle
itself.

After the tours of the famous castles we took a fun drive
up the old Romantic Road, stopping where we pleased and wandering through
some of the smaller, less well known towns. Our final stop was at the end of
the day in Harburg. Then we headed back to bustling Munich to return the car
and catch our night train to Venice. We discovered the that night trains are
operated by the country of destination. And the Italian sleep cars are not
as nice as those we had in Germany. It was a crowded and loud night. We did
not get a whole lot of sleep.
