Europe ~ 2002

A 44 day whirlwind...

In the fall of 2002 I was given the opportunity to leave my job for a 6 week (paid) sabbatical. My wife and I decided far in advance that this was our chance to travel Europe by train and hostel - something neither of us did during or after college, but had always wanted to do...  But before we packed our bags we did some planning.

We decided to travel light (and fast). We wanted to see as much as we could, even if it meant sacrificing quality time in locations where we would want to stay longer. We promised ourselves that in the future, we would do our best to return to the places we missed and those we loved and didn't have enough time to thoroughly enjoy.

45 days may not seem like a whirlwind trip to you at the moment, but check out our list of destinations!

London

Broughton Castle

Bath

South Wales

Dublin

Ghent

Paris

Amsterdam

Berlin

Prague

Austria

Munich

Background information regarding this travelogue...

My wife and I are fairly experienced travelers and we are the type that "go and do." We wake early, walk many miles a day, eat light meals (usually), and aren't big "party-goers." We are fans of Rick Steves and his philosophy on travel. We like to stay in cozy, inexpensive accommodations, eat the local food, drink the local beer and wine, and meet the people that actually live in the places we travel. We have deep respect, greatly appreciate, and are fascinated by, other cultures, history and art.

Throughout the travelogue, I may mention places we slept or ate. This is because they were places we enjoyed. If I don't mention it, we either didn't go there or I wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

I always like to know what guide books and resources people use to plan and undertake their trip. We used the internet a lot to research our trip - hotel, transportation, and sights. We also used the following books in the planning stages and during our travels: Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door 2002, Rick Steves' Europe 101, and Frommer's Europe 2002.

If you have questions about our travels or my images, please drop me an email. I'd be happy to hear from you.
