Ice Lakes Basin ~ July 25th & 26th, 2007                                                                  Next Photo >

Location... Ice Lakes Basin is a premier wildflower photography and hiking destination in Southwest Colorado. The trailhead is located in San Juan National Forest near the South Mineral Campground and the town of Silverton, CO. I'd heard about and seen photos from the area from numerous photographer friends. And I was excited to spend a couple of days exploring both the lower and upper basins.

What I didn't count on was practically getting rained out. The monsoon season arrived somewhat early and in full force in Colorado's Southern mountains. I spent the better part of my afternoon and evening ducking for cover from the rain, hail and lightning. I even set up a temporary camp to ride out the storms before moving higher and setting up camp for the night.

It was a wet, stormy night and clouds shrouded the Eastern horizon at dawn, blocking out most of the warm sunrise light. Regardless, I enjoyed the flowers, scenery and the trip in general, and came away with a few good images.

The Route... The Ice Lakes Basin trailhead is right at a switchback along CR 12, the road to Clear Lake. This is the upper trailhead that cuts off a mile or so and a several feet of elevation from the lower trailhead near the South Mineral Campground. It is about 3 miles and around 2,000 feet of elevation gain from the upper trailhead to Ice Lake. I camped a bit higher, almost to Fuller Lake, about 3/4 of a mile past Ice Lake.
