Lost Lake ~ July 27th & 28th, 2007                                                                                                                    Next Photo >

Location... Lost Lake is nestled high in the tundra of the Weminuche Wilderness in Southwest Colorado. It is a just a few trail miles from the popular Highland Mary Lakes. My destination was a ridge near an unnamed lake above Lost Lake, overlooking the Elk Creek drainage, with fantastic views of Vestal and Arrow Peaks.

The Route... The most common route to Highland Mary Lakes is from the Cunningham Gulch Trailhead. I opted for a tundra hiking experience, starting at Stony Pass and hiking a short section of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), before taking the Whitehead Mountain Trail. This is certainly a longer route and turned out to have just as much (if not more) vertical climbing. But it also provided dramatic views for much of the route. I took 2 slightly different routes hiking out and back, as you can see by the GPS tracks displayed above. The distance from Stony Pass to Lost Lake averages out to about 7.2 miles with 2100' of climbing elevation.
